How To Prepare For The Form 2290 Online Deadline

To file your Form 2290 Online quickly, you will need several pieces of information on hand. Be sure to gather the following items before e-filing your Form 2290 (unless you have already e-filed with Precise2290)

What you will need to file Form 2290 Online

Business information

You will need to have the most accurate and up-to-date information about your business on hand. This includes the business type, business name, business address, and EIN.

EIN

Your Employer Identification Number (EIN) is like a Social Security Number (SSN) for your business. As a trucker, it is the only form of identification that the IRS accepts for Form 2290 Online Filing.

If you do not have one, you will need to apply for one. You can do that at this link, however, be aware that new EINs typically take 10+ business days to become active.

Vehicle Information

You will also need information about each one of the vehicles you are filing for. This includes First Used Month (FUM), Gross Taxable Weight, and VIN number.

Fortunately, if you are filing for lots of vehicles, we also have a bulk upload feature that makes this process simple.

FUM

Your vehicle’s First Used Month, is, clearly, the first month you began using the vehicle during the tax year. Your Form 2290 Online will be due at the end of the month following your FUM. So if you began using a truck in 1st July, your Form 2290 will be due at the end of 31st August.

If you are renewing a truck that you have been using for a year or more, the FUM will be July.

Gross taxable weight

The gross taxable weight of your vehicle is a sum of the following information:

1. The actual unloaded weight of a fully equipped vehicle.

2. The actual unloaded weight of any trailers or semi-trailers that is fully equipped and is generally used in combination with the vehicle.

3. The weight of the maximum load usually carried on the vehicle and the trailers or semi-trailers.

Learn more about Gross Taxable Weight here.

VIN

The Vehicle Identification Number on your truck serves as a unique identifier for your vehicle. It is important to get the VIN exactly correct on your Form 2290 because one of the most public reasons for the IRS to reject your Form 2290 is because of a duplicate VIN number filing.

Also, if your VIN is wrong, you will need to correct it for your stamped Schedule 1 to be accurate.

File your Form 2290 Online today!

The Form 2290 Deadline 2020-21 for most truckers is one week away! It takes less than 5 minutes to file your 2290 if you have all your information on hand.

Penalties for Late Filing IRS HVUT Form 2290

July 1 is the first-day filers may e-file their IRS HVUT Form 2290 for the new tax year 2020-21.  The deadline for completing your 2290 submission without penalty is August 31. Anyone who files after this deadline, including those resubmitting previously rejected files, will be assessed a penalty on their truck taxes.  The best way to avoid these issues is to start filing early, but here is some more information for those who haven’t yet filed as the deadline approaches:

IRS HVUT Form 2290 Filing Penalty
IRS HVUT Form 2290 Filing

HVUT Penalties

If you fail to submit your Form 2290 Filing or HVUT payment before the August 31 deadline, the IRS will send you a notice with the penalty.  There are instances of the IRS waiving the penalty for extenuating circumstances, though this is rare and shouldn’t be relied upon. The IRS may also issue penalties for making false or fraudulent claims on returns such as misrepresenting the vehicle mileage or gross weight.

Penalty Calculation

Penalties can be costly! The IRS will calculate penalties after reviewing possible reasons for delay. The normal penalty amount is 4.5% of the taxes due after the deadline. Thereafter, the penalty increases each month by 0.5% of the total tax due for up to 5 months. There is also a provision of additional interest of 0.54% per month on the total tax owed.

Effect of late filing on vehicle operation

Don’t delay in filing your taxes or they may affect other areas of your business. The reason you need to complete your 2290 HVUT taxes is so that you can receive updated vehicle tags from the DMV.  If you fail to do so, you will be operating your vehicle illegally which can have other severe repercussions, including suspension of your vehicle registration.

Top Ten Mistakes To Avoid When E-Filing Form 2290 Online For TY 2020-21

Truck Taxes are complicated – mistakes sometimes happen.  Fortunately, TaxSeer2290’s smart wizard-driven e-file platform takes the guesswork out of doing your truck taxes and prevents many mistakes from happening in the first place.  From the experts of TaxSeer2290, here are some other mistakes to avoid so that your form 2290 online filing isn’t rejected by the IRS:

Form 2290 online filing through Taxseer2290 e-file platform
Form 2290 online filing through Taxseer2290 e-file platform
  1. Mistyping your email address at sign up: After your form 2290 e-filing is complete, our system will email you in minutes with your stamped Schedule 1. Make sure it arrives on time by providing the correct email address at signup.
  2. Selecting incorrect user type during sign up: Our platform allows for multiple account types, including individual operators or tax professionals who manage the returns of multiple clients. When signing up as a tax professional, we require additional information, including your Paid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN).
  3. Business Name & EIN not matching: The Business Type, Business Name, Employer Identification Number (EIN), and the address you provide must match with the IRS’ records. If they don’t, your e-file will be rejected. In this case, the TaxSeer2290 system will notify you of the mistake. If you’re unsure of the specifics of your business information, you can call the IRS help-desk directly to verify.
  4. E-filing within 2 weeks of receiving a new EIN:  If you’ve recently been assigned an Employer Identification Number (EIN), be sure to wait at least two weeks before you file your form 2290 online as the IRS e-file system must be updated with your new information. Any submissions done before the 2 weeks period are generally rejected. If this happens to you, TaxSeer2290 offers free refiling of your 2290 forms.
  5. Incorrect Filing Year: Details matter!  Be sure to select either the current or previous tax year when completing your e-filing. You may also pre-file your 2290 form for the next tax year based on your expected usage and mileage.
  6. Incorrect Timeline: The HVUT tax year runs from July – June.  Therefore, when paying HVUT taxes for one full year, you should select July as the first use month of your file. If you purchased your vehicle any time after July of that tax year, you may set your first use month to be the month of purchase.  Our Taxseer2290 system will then automatically calculate taxes on the vehicle based on the first use month and weight category of your vehicle.
  7. Incorrect VIN: One of the most common mistakes we see is that users make typos when entering the long, complex vehicle identification number (VIN).  Pay close attention during your filing to ensure no mistakes are made. However, TaxSeer2290 allows for the filing of amendments to correct these types of mistakes.
  8. Incorrect Weight Category: Be sure to select the correct weight category of your vehicle. If you select the wrong category, your taxes will be calculated incorrectly and an amendment will need to be filed.
  9. Incorrect filing type: If your vehicle traveled fewer than 5000 miles in the previous year (or 7500 miles for agricultural vehicles), it may be classified as “suspended”, saving you money. However, if you select the wrong category during filing, you’ll have to make an amendment and pay to correct the balance owed. Additionally, the IRS may levy penalties against filers for misreporting the filing type.
  10. Incorrect Bank Account Number: Entering an incorrect bank account# may not lead to the form 2290 online filing rejection but it will lead to IRS notice imposing penalty as the IRS efile system will not be able to debit the tax amount from the incorrect bank account# provided.

If you have any questions about these or other pitfalls, feel free to contact our TaxSeer2290 support through either live chat or email. Let us help you ensure your taxes are completed accurately and quickly. We also provide a list of FAQs at the Taxseer2290 website

FAQs for Filers who e-file Form 2290 Online

1.     Who is required to e-File Form 2290 and pay Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT)?

Anyone who registers a heavy highway motor vehicle in their name with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more and going to drive more than 5000 miles (7500 miles for farm vehicles) must file Form 2290 and pay taxes every year. If you are the owner of vans, pickup trucks, panel trucks, etc., whose gross weight is less than 55,000 pounds then you are not required to file form 2290 as these vehicles don't fall under the heavy highway vehicle category. Trucks that are used for 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for farm trucks) and having gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more are required to file form 2290 return but are excluded from paying the tax.

2.     Who is required to e-File Form 2290 Online?

IRS encourages all Form 2290 filers to e-file as it is quick and easy and it eliminates all manual efforts. If you are reporting 25 or more taxable heavy highway motor vehicles for any taxable period, you must e-file through an IRS-approved software provider like Taxseer2290.com. You will have to pay a small service fee to the software provider or e-file transmitter you choose. When you e-file, your Schedule 1 will be available almost immediately after IRS accepts it. Though most of the HVUT form 2290 e-file providers provide nearly all the functionalities that IRS expects for e-filing but there is a wide variation in the pricing between them. Taxseer2290 provides a very secure and quick e-file system at the most competitive price.

3.     Why do I need an Employer Identification Number (EIN) to e-file?

IRS system issues a unique 9-digit Employer Identification Number (EIN) for all businesses operating in US for the tax administration purpose. IRS e-file system uses a combination of your EIN and your name as a unique identifier for the name control for validation purpose. On an e-filed return, if a taxpayer's unique ID doesn't match the IRS records, it's rejected. Please note that SSN cannot be used to IRS e-File Form 2290.

4.     Can I immediately e-file after just receiving my new Employer Identification Number(EIN)?

IRS suggests new businesses who have received their EIN recently to wait for atleast 2 weeks before they e-file form 2290. It usually takes around 2 weeks for the name control to be established in the IRS system and if the form 2290 e-file submits before this period then the e-files are rejected. However, Taxseer2290 provides a very easy workflow in the e-file system where a rejected form 2290 e-file can be very easily resubmitted any number of times without any additinal cost. Taxseer2290 suggests form 2290 e-filers to go ahead with the filing any time and even if it is rejected due to the new EIN, the e-filers can resubmit it at a later date to receive the Schedule-1 without any additional cost.

5.     How will I know the IRS has received my return?

You will get an e-mail notification from us along with the IRS approved Schedule-1 containing a watermark of the e-file logo in the background. You can also access the same Schedule-1 from the Taxseer2290 site any time and this is preserved for atleast 5 years at no additional charges. For More Info:

How to quickly receive IRS Stamped Proof of Payment for your HVUT Form 2290 Online Filing during COVID-19?

COVID-19 pandemic has caused a surge in the IRS HVUT Form 2290 Online Filing by the individual filers as they scramble to get their new/renewed vehicle tag from the DMV. First-time e-filers often wonder how they will receive their proof of payment, also known as a Schedule 1, for their HVUT Form 2290 online filing. FYI, DMV needs the truck tax payment proof from the truckers applying for obtaining a new tag or renewing the tag for their vehicle. After you e-file form 2290 using TaxSeer, the IRS stamped Schedule 1 will arrive in your Taxseer inbox as well emailed to your registered email address within minutes!  Here are some other common questions we’ve received from new users regarding Schedule 1:

  1. How and when do I receive the form 2290 e-filing proof of payment (Schedule 1)?
To get started with TaxSeer2290, select the “Start Filing” option in the Taxseer2290 home page. The e-file wizard will then guide you through the process of form 2290 e-filing.  Once you pay the service charge, our platform will automatically e-file form 2290 to the IRS system and receive the Schedule 1 with the digital watermark as the stamp, which will then be emailed to you generally within five minutes. You can also download your Schedule 1 from the TaxSeer2290 dashboard.  We automatically save your filing data and the related forms and provide online access to these forms for five years without additional charges.
2. Where does my payment amount appear on the Schedule 1?
It doesn’t.  Instead, the IRS digitally stamped Schedule 1 will only display the VIN and Weight Category of the vehicle(s) registered.  The Schedule 1 itself is proof that your 2290 was submitted and your taxes were paid. Simply take the Schedule 1 to the DMV to complete your vehicle registration.
3. Where does the stamp appear on the Schedule 1?
While it’s often referred to as a “stamp”, the IRS actually provides an e-file digital watermark on your Schedule 1 which displays the received date of your Form 2290 e-file. This watermarked form serves as proof that your form 2290 e-filing is complete.
4. I’ve received my Schedule 1 – now what?
Once you receive your Schedule 1 one from TaxSeer2290, simply take it to your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA).  There, you will receive a new/renewed registration tag for your vehicle(s).
