E-File HVUT Form 2290 on Time to Avoid Penalty

Filing your Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 online before the IRS due date of 31st August is critical to stay compliant & avoid penalty and continue your operations. Receiving a penalty notice from the IRS is depressing as it adds to the taxes that you already owe and Taxseer2290 suggests filers to not wait till the end of August and file form 2290 on time and receive your IRS stamped proof of payment (Schedule 1) within minutes.
IRS Form 2290 filing starts from 1st July and the deadline to file taxes for the full tax year without penalty is 31st August. If the filing gets rejected then it is the responsibility of the filer to correct and resubmit it and get the Schedule 1 before the deadline. If your Form 2290 filing or payment is late then IRS imposes penalties that will be over the taxes that you owe.
What happens if you fail to file & pay your form 2290?
If you fail to submit your Form 2290 filing or HVUT payment before the HVUT due date then IRS will send you a notice with the penalty. However, there is a possibility that your penalty may be waived by the IRS if you provide satisfactory reason for the delay. It is up to the IRS to accept or reject the reason and decide on the penalty. There are penalties for making false or fraudulent returns too specially related to the gross weight category and mileage.
How does IRS calculate the penalty for the delay?
Taxseer2290 system is not authorized by IRS to calculate the Penalties and the filers can normally file the form 2290 through us even after the deadline. Penalties are handled directly by the IRS and it is calculated based on the following rules:
The normal penalty is 4.5% of the taxes due after the due date. There is a provision of additional interest of 0.54% per month on the total tax owed.
What is the effect of late filing on vehicle operation?
You can obtain or renew your vehicle tag by presenting the IRS stamped proof of payment (schedule 1) to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). If you have not filed your IRS HVUT form 2290 and received the schedule 1 within the due date then you are operating your vehicle illegally and this has other repercussions including suspension of your vehicle registration.
E-file HVUT Form 2290 with Taxseer2290
You just have to sign up with www.taxseer2290.com and select the Start Filing option. The e-file wizard will guide you step by step to complete and submit the error-free filing. The IRS stamped Schedule 1 is emailed to the registered email address and this can be printed and presented to the DMV to get the vehicle tag renewed.

Top 10 mistakes to avoid during the IRS HVUT Form 2290 e-file

There is nothing worse than seeing the annual truck tax filing rejected by the IRS and then putting extra effort and money to refile. Avoid IRS HVUT Form 2290 filing mistakes this tax year when you file form 2290 online with Precise2290.com and receive your IRS stamped proof of payment (schedule 1) within 5 minutes of the order submission.

Form 2290 e-file
Form 2290 e-file tips to avoid mistakes

We’ve got some tips to make the e-filing process smooth & painless to avoid the agony of refilling your HVUT filing. Filing Form 2290 online before the IRS due date saves you money and get your vehicle on road timely, but mistakes could prevent you from meeting the Form 2290 Tax Year 2019 deadline.
The following sections would help users understand the intricacies of HVUT Form 2290 online filing and provide few tips to avoid any mistakes that could delay the e-filing process:
  1. Mistype email address during sign up: Sign up is very quick & easy with Precise2290.com. Enter the first & last name, email address (for user id), and a password to open an account. Some users inadvertently type the incorrect email address and complete the sign up process. With the incorrect email address entered in the system, all emails related to the registration confirmation, invoice, Schedule 1, rejections & reminders are sent to the incorrect email address. Precise2290 provides the option to the users to correct the email address through the account.
  2. Incorrect account type during sign up: Some users select the account type as “Tax Professional” instead of the “Only Me” option during the Sign up process. There are additional steps required to be performed by the Tax Professionals including entering the Paid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). The users who are not tax professional get stuck due to this selection as PTIN is a required field for Tax Professionals and they have to contact the Precise2290 administrator to change the account type.
  3. Business Name & EIN mismatch: The Business Name and Employer Identification Number (EIN) should match with the IRS record stored in their file. In the event of a mismatch, the e-file is rejected and reasons are correctly displayed on the rejected filing. The users are notified about the rejections through emails containing steps to resubmit the rejected filing free of cost. Alternatively, the user can see the error message and the resubmission option on the Precise2290 dashboard screen. Verify the information from the EIN document sent by the IRS or call the IRS help-desk to verify your business information.
  4. E-filing within 2 weeks of receiving a new EIN: For the new EIN, IRS suggest users to wait for at least 2 weeks before e-filing form 2290 as it takes around that many days to update the new EIN in the e-file system. Any submissions done before the 2 weeks period are generally rejected and the users are notified about this rule from IRS and asked to resubmit their order free of cost after the completion of 2 weeks and receive the IRS stamped Schedule 1.
  5. Incorrect Tax Year: You can e-file form 2290 for the current & previous tax years as well as pre-file the form 2290 for the next tax year and so it is important to correctly choose the tax year to avoid the complications of undoing this mistake.
  6. Incorrect First-Use Month: If you are paying the HVUT taxes for the vehicle for the whole year then select July as the first-use month. If the vehicle was bought any time in the tax year after July then the month the vehicle was put on the road will be the first use month. Precise2290 automatically calculate taxes for the vehicles based on the First-Use Month and the Gross Weight Category. It automatically prorates the taxes if the First-Use Month falls after July. If the user incorrectly enters the Begin Month then the incorrect taxes will be calculated during Form 2290 e-filing. Special efforts are required to correct this mistake and it should be avoided in the first place.
  7. Incorrect VIN: Due to the complex format of the VIN, the users often make mistakes while entering the 17 characters and due to that the incorrect VIN is reported on the IRS stamped Schedule 1. File Form 2290 amendment (VIN Correction option) to correct it and get the updated Schedule 1 within 5 minutes.
  8. Incorrect Gross Weight Category: Choosing the wrong vehicle gross weight category during form 2290 e-filing leads to incorrect tax calculation and this means incorrect filing. The user will be required to file for Form 2290 Amendment – Gross Weight Increase to fix this issue and this costs additional time and effort.
  9. Incorrect filing type: If the vehicle is filed under suspended vehicle category even though the vehicle is driven more than 5000 miles (7500 miles for agricultural vehicle) in the tax year then the user has to file for Form 2290 Amendment – Mileage Increase to correct the form 2290 filing. Penalties can be imposed by the IRS on the truck operator for misreporting the filing type.
  10. Incorrect Bank Account#: If youselect the Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) option to make the IRS tax payment and enter the incorrect bank account# then the IRS payment system will fail to debit the tax amount from the bank account. This leads to a notice from the IRS with the HVUT penalty and Precise2290 suggest users to be extra cautious while entering the bank account# as there is no way we can validate the bank account before submitting to the IRS e-file system.
These aforementioned issues can be easily avoided by carefully reading the instructions shown on the Precise2290 online screens to prevent any delay in form 2290 e-filing and receiving the IRS stamped Schedule 1 within 5 minutes of the order submission. Precise2290 is committed to provide a good user experience during IRS Form 2290 e-filing and suggest users to use the FAQ provided on the www.Precise2290.com website or contact our chat support in case of any confusion.

Taxseer2290 has been developed with efficiency, security, usability, & cost effectiveness in mind so that it really works in the self-service model where the users can perform the online form 2290 filing with minimal support from our US-based support staff.
With the next generation form 2290 online solution, you’ll perform the following step-by-step guided filing to complete and submit the form 2290 e filing and receive the IRS stamped proof of payment (Schedule 1) within 5 minutes:

1. Create a free account with Taxseer2290.com

Create a free account on www.Taxseer2290.com by just providing your email address, name and password. It takes just less than a minute to sign up and then you are ready to start filing.

2. Enter the business information

The user is required to provide the business details of the organization filing the Form 2290 or Form 8849 returns. You’ll need the Employer Identification Number (EIN), Business Name, and Business Address.

3. Enter the vehicle’s VIN and Gross Weight

Taxseer2290 very smartly handles the filing of taxable, tax-suspended and credit vehicles in the step by step process and calculates the total taxes for the taxable vehicles and adjusts the credit amount for the credit vehicles. If the credit amount in the form 2290 is more than the tax amount owed then the system automatically files form 8849 – Schedule 6 to claim credit for the balance amount. The following section provides details about the vehicle types involved with the form 2290 filing:
  • Taxable Vehicle – If you drive the vehicle more than 5000 miles (7500 miles for agricultural vehicle) during the tax year then file the vehicle as a taxable vehicle. IRS provides the rate table based on the vehicle gross weight starting with 55,000 pounds (Category A) and ending with the 75,000 pounds and above (Category-V) and the Taxseer2290 system automatically calculates the IRS payment based on the entered gross weight and the first used month of the vehicle.
  • Tax-Suspended Vehicle – If the total mileage on the vehicle is less than 5000 miles (7500 miles for agricultural vehicle) during the tax year then the filing should performed under the tax-suspended vehicle (W) category. Though there is no tax imposed on the suspended vehicle but the form 2290 filing should to be performed every year.
  • Credit Vehicle – If you have to report about the vehicles that were destroyed / damaged / stolen and want to claim credit for the taxes already paid for these vehicles then you can enter those vehicles under the credit vehicle option. You can also include vehicles for credit that were reported under taxable vehicle in the previous tax year but the mileage did not exceed beyond the 5000 miles (7500 miles for agricultural vehicles).

 4. Complete the IRS payment option

While filing your truck taxes, you can select from any of the four payment options for HVUT payment that you owe to the IRS:
  • Electronic Fund Withdrawal (EFW): This is the most widely used payment option by HVUT filers where they provide their bank checking/saving account number and the routing number. Taxseer2290 passes the bank account information to the IRS system and the tax amount is directly debited from the provided account.
  • Electronic federal tax payment system (EFTPS): To use the EFTPS option during the HVUT Form 2290 e-filing, the user just need to select the EFTPS payment option and accept the responsibility to pay timely through EFTPS account. There is no more information required to be entered on the Taxseer2290 site for EFTPS payment. The user can submit the Form 2290 e-file order on Taxseer2290 and instantly receive the Schedule 1. The user then needs to go to the www.eftps.gov site and log on to the EFTPS account and pay the HVUT tax amount. IRS system will be able to link the payment with the Form 2290 filing based on the EIN.
  • Check/Money order: You can e-file form 2290 and send payment by check or money order. Make sure to print your completed form 2290 from the Taxseer2290 site and cut the voucher in the bottom of the document and send it to the IRS along with the signed check.
  • Credit/Debit card payment: You can also pay the HVUT that you owe to the IRS through the debit/credit card. However, it is important to note that there is a service charge associated with the debit/credit card use as well as the actual payment is done on the IRS site. Taxseer2290 prompts the IRS payment instructions on the screen during filing as well as the same instruction is also mailed to the registered user as soon as the order is submitted on the site.

5. Pay & submit the filing

You can make payment of our service charge through Credit Card and submit the filing. We don’t provide refund after the order is submitted and the Schedule 1 received.

6. Receive the IRS stamped schedule 1 within 5 minutes

Taxseer2290 will immediately submit the form 2290 e-file data to the IRS system and get the IRS stamped schedule 1 within 5 minutes. The schedule 1 is immediately emailed to the user’s registered email address and it can also be downloaded from the site.

Taxes are calculated based on the first use month and the gross weight of the vehicle. If the first use month of filing is different than July then the system automatically prorates the tax amount accordingly and the taxes are calculated only for the period the vehicle is operated.
5. Enter vehicle details: Precise2290 handles the filing of Taxable, Tax-suspended, and Credit vehicles in a step-by-step process and calculates the total HVUT for the taxable vehicles and adjusts the credit amount for the credit vehicles while keeping the tax amount to zero for tax-suspended vehicles. 6. Enter IRS payment details: While filing HVUT Form 2290, you can pay the HVUT to IRS through any of the four options:
  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) – Provide the Checking/Saving account information and the IRS system directly debits the tax amount from the bank account. This is the most widely used option and there is no service charge for this option

Once you’ve decided on your preferred form of payment, TaxSeer2290 will send you instructions on how to make your payment. As a reminder, this payment is separate from the TaxSeer service charge and must be made outside of the TaxSeer system (barring the EFW option) due to IRS regulations.  Fortunately, our easy-to-follow instructions will make this process as pain-free as possible. If you decide to pay via Check or Money Order, TaxSeer will send you the payment voucher via email for you to include with your mailed submission to the IRS.  If you choose to pay via credit card, we will send clear instructions on how to do so through the IRS website.
Rejected Filings Resubmission Reminder
If your e-file is rejected by the IRS for any reason, Taxseer2290 has your back!  We will send reminder emails so that you can quickly correct and resubmit your rejected filing and get back to managing your fleet.

IRS HVUT Form 2290 e-file Prerequisites

Precise2290 provides wizard-based form 2290 online filing option to the Truckers and Tax Professionals to quickly & securely submit error-free e-filings in the most cost effective way and get the IRS stamped proof of payment within 5 minutes. The proven e-filing workflow ensures that new users very easily submit the filings to the IRS system without needing assistance from us. To make sure that the entire process goes through smoothly, there are some prerequisites that the e-filers should be aware of before they start the HVUT Form 2290 e-file with the IRS through Precise2290:
  1. Email Address to sign up and operate the account: A valid email address of the user operating the account will be required to sign up on the Precise2290.com site. All email communications including the delivery of IRS Stamped Schedule 1 is sent to this address. The sign up process on Precise2290.com site is very easy and just need the first & last name, email address and a password of the user to create an account. Forgot Password option can be used to recover the password incase the user forgets the password.
  2. Business Information: The user is required to provide the business details of the organization filing the Form 2290 or Form 8849 returns. Some of the key information related to the business are:
    1. Business type – Correctly select the business type from the list e.g.; Corporation, Estates, Partnerships, Trust and Fiduciaries, Exempt Organization, Inc, LLC, Sole Proprietorship, and Others
    2. Business Name & Doing Business As (DBA) name – Use DBA only if it is used otherwise ignore it
    3. Employer Identification Number (EIN) – EIN should be at least 2 weeks old before the efile can be submitted for the business
    4. Business Address – Enter the current business address without any special character
    5. Contact Information – Contact details for the business
    6. Signing Authority details – A 5-digit PIN# is required along with the signing authority details. This is used by the IRS for the verification purpose when the e-filer contacts IRS for any issue
SSN cannot be used to file form 2290 and only EIN of the business can be used. IRS suggest that businesses with new EIN should wait for at least 2 weeks before they submit the form 2290 e-file with the IRS as it takes that much time to update the new EIN in the e-file system. Any e-file submitted before that will result in the rejection of the filing.
  • Vehicle(s) VIN & Gross Weight: E-Filer will require the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) number of the vehicle which is generally a 17 character identification number used to uniquely identify a vehicle. The gross weight of the vehicle (the empty weight of the vehicle plus the maximum weight that it will carry on it) will be required and the system will automatically calculate the taxes based on that. You will also be required to know under which category the vehicle has to be filed e.g., Taxable, Tax-Suspended, or Agricultural.
A vehicle whose gross weight is 55,000 pounds or more and the total mileage for the entire tax year exceed 5000 miles (7500 miles for the agricultural vehicles) is considered a taxable vehicle and taxes should be paid to the IRS. If the mileage on the vehicle is less than 5000 miles (7500 miles for the agricultural vehicles) in the Tax year then it is called a Tax-Suspended vehicle. It is to be noted that no tax is applicable for the tax-suspended vehicle but reporting to the IRS is mandatory.
  • IRS payment related details:  IRS provides four payment options through which the HVUT payment can be done 1) Electronic Fund Withdrawal (EFW) from the checking / saving account 2) EFTPS 3) Check/Money Order 4) Credit/Debit card
If the e-filer selects the Electronic Fund Withdrawal (EFW) payment option to pay through the checking/saving account, the bank account# and the routing # is required. For the EFTPS payment option, an EFTPS account with the IRS is required. For further information or enrolling into the EFTPS account, please visit the website www.eftps.gov. If the Check / Money Order payment option is selected then the check or money order should be mailed to the IRS with the 2290V voucher that is generated with the completed form 2290. For Credit/Debit card payment option, the e-filer has to go to a different site ( https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-taxes-by-credit-or-debit-card) to make the payment. There is a convenience fee of around 2% charged by the credit/debit card payment processing vendors
  • Credit Card details to pay for the Precise2290 service charge: We accept credit card for the e-file service charge payment and the e-filer can choose from any card from leading vendors like American Express, Visa, and Master card to make payment. The card number, expiration date, CVV#, Name on the card, and the billing address will be required to make the payment for our service charge.
Once the aforementioned information is in-hand the e-filer can go to the website www.precise2290.com and click on the sign up option to create a free account with us. Once logged into the Precise2290 system, click the Start Filing button and the e-file wizard will guide the user step-by-step to complete and submit the HVUT filing. IRS stamped Proof of Payment (Schedule 1) will be provided within minutes which can be printed and presented to the DMV to obtain/renew the vehicle tag. This is in sharp contrast to the paper filing which takes weeks to receive the IRS stamped proof of payment and the filing records are available online for at least 5 years.

The recent trends have shown that truckers and tax professionals have been switching their Form 2290 e-file services to Precise2290 due to the exorbitant e-filing service charges charged by some IRS approved e-file service provider as well as the inflexibility and slow speed of their system. IRS Stamped Schedule 1 (Proof of Payment) for Form 2290 online filing

When you file your heavy highway vehicle use tax (HVUT) online with the IRS, you will receive a stamped form 2290 Schedule 1 document. This Schedule 1 can be used as confirmation with the DMV when registering your heavy vehicle(s) that your Federal Tax Form 2290 has been received and accepted by the IRS. If you file your HVUT form 2290 in a traditional manner, you may spend weeks waiting for your IRS stamped proof of payment – Schedule 1 document while your trucks are sitting idle, not earning you money.  Instead, when you choose to e-file using TaxSeer2290, your electronic filing data is transmitted to the IRS system within seconds. The IRS system will then check your Form 2290 against the information in its database. Once your Form is confirmed as complete, you will receive your digitally stamped Schedule 1.  When you file with TaxSeer2290, the entire process takes minutes, not weeks!  Let’s take a closer look at what is included in your stamped Schedule 1 document.
Standard Content of the Schedule 1
The Schedule 1 document contains standard filing information for your business such as the Employer Identification Number (EIN), Business Name, Doing Business As (DBA), Business Address, Tax Year, Month of First Use, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and Vehicle Weight Categories. Since you may enter multiple VINs as part of your e-filing, these VINs and corresponding vehicle category will be displayed on your Schedule 1 in a tabular format. The DMV will check that this information matches with what is listed in your vehicle’s registration. Even though your Schedule 1 serves a proof of payment for your HVUT, the actual paid tax amount will not appear on the document. Instead, the VIN and the vehicle category printed on the Schedule 1 serves as confirmation that your HVUT has been paid.

Your Business's IRS Forms Are Due This Week

It’s getting down to the nitty-gritty for IRS return filing for business owners!

Not only are your
1099 MISC Forms due by this Friday (well, except for the 1099-MISCs reporting nonemployee compensation that were due January 31), your Affordable Care Act Forms 1094 and 1095 are due as well! And this is the e-filing deadline so, if for some reason, you were thinking of sending in paper forms: don’t. They’ll be counted as late, you’ll incur a late-filing penalty, and you’ll be making the whole ordeal a lot more difficult for yourself - especially since e-filing is the easier, more secure option for filing anyway.

You may remember last year and years before when W-2 Forms were due March 31 as well. Unfortunately - and
we tried to warn you! - the IRS changed the W-2 deadline for 2016 tax year forms to January 31, 2017. If you missed the memo, try to get these forms in as soon as possible, but remember there’s a chance you’ll receive IRS penalties anyway.

At any rate, this year for the 2016 tax year, Forms 1099 and ACA Forms 1094 and 1095 are due this Sunday, March 31, 2019.

Of course, Express IRS Forms is here to help you get those forms e-filed correctly and securely on time, but if you’re still a little hesitant, we’ve also got another card to play: Form 8809. Form 8809 is the extension form for information returns like Forms 1099 and 1094/1095 and when you apply, you get an automatic 30-day extension to get your forms to the IRS. Don’t even have to have an excuse or anything! You can e-file Form 8809 and get your extension confirmation email all in just a few hours - and for only $3.55 - with Taxseer!

You can even go ahead and e-file a Form 8809 and if you still get your other forms in on time, you’re golden! The IRS doesn’t care if you apply for an extension and don’t use it, but they do very much care if you don’t apply for an extension and end up being late.

So, to get started, just
log into your Taxseer account, click the big, orange Start New Form button, and get going on your, 1099, and/or ACA Forms! And if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to our support team: we’re available Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EST by phone (240.780.6153) and live chat. And we also provide 24/7 assistance at support@taxseer.com!
